Everest Base Camp Sherpas : The People of the Mountains

Everest Base Camp Sherpas : The People of the Mountains

Sherpas are some of the most well-trained and experienced climbers in the Himalayas. Their wisdom, strength and sharp instincts—in despite of their small figure—often leads outsiders to believe they have a ‘sixth sense’ or ‘magical powers’ in these isolated places. For this reason, companies wouldn’t think of going on an expedition or trekking tour without their guidance and assistance.
Yet, if you were to ask a Sherpa about these ‘heighten instincts’, they’d respond by saying (very humbly and modestly) that they don’t possess any special powers or characteristics; rather, they simply listen to the mountains and respect the custom that She (the mountain) always decides who goes up and who doesn’t, not man.
Themba Sherpa : 59 year old from Everest Base Camp

This is a big thought to grasp for foreign travelers and tourists who often feel they know what’s best based on experience, technology and gear. It’s not unusual for foreign climbers to visit the Himalayas with an ego about their abilities and feel because of their climbing background, high tech equipment or money and status, they’re able to close the gap around these ‘mountain mysteries’ and succeed with confidence.
“Ego in mountains leads to accident and death!” my instructor Mr. Kusang Dorjee Sherpa used to repeatedly state in my mountaineering course.
“Don’t think you know better than mountain or mountain people who born in these places. Even them don’t have ego and they from here!”
Mr. Kusang Sherpa is a 5 time Everest summiteer, and considering he’s summitted Mt. Everest from all three sides including the extremely difficult Khangsung Face (which has only been done by a handful of people in the world),  I’d say his advice is worth applying.
It doesn’t matter if you’re planning a trip to Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp or any other mountain base or peak in the Himalayas, having guidance from people who have lived and grown up in these barren, enchanting lands will not only increase your chances of reaching the goal, but will ensure your safe return to Kathmandu.

But what is a Sherpa and what do they do?
Sherpa’s are commonly known as people who live in the Himalayas and typically serve as porters on expeditions. They’re hired to carry goods and personal belonging up the mountains and to set up camps. These types of Sherpa’s are commonly found throughout EBC and ABC treks.
Then there are the more experienced Sherpa’s who are chosen to be part of an expedition team. They may be hired to guide climbers to base camps or high summit peaks. Other responsibilities might include fixing ropes or clearing routes.
What many people don’t know, however, is ‘Sherpa’ is the name of an ethnic group found in mountainous regions in the Himalayas. And people from these regions often have the surname Sherpa. So while they might be serving a Sherpa role, many also have ‘Sherpa’ as a last name.
Overall, mountain people know the Himalayas better than anyone else because they’ve lived in these remote, isolated environments their entire lives. While they might not possess a super power visible to the human eye, they certainly are super at what they do and know the weather, landscape and environment better than any outsider or device. Their experience in the mountains isn’t solely based on expeditions and trekking tours to common places such as Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp; their experience is based on LIFE experience and this they’ve been accumulating since the day they were born.
So if you’re thinking of embarking on a trip to the mountains, I’d highly recommend the support and guidance of a local Sherpa. Even if you’ve read many blogs and articles online about how easy and cost effective it is to ‘do it yourself’, there’s no cost more valuable than that of a life.  If you have any questions about a particular trek or would like to know more about our expert Sherpa Team, contact us for details.

Google Plus – A Complete Overview On Features

Google Plus is a new social network launched by Google recently in June 28, 2011. Google calls this service as a “project” because they don’t want people to think of this as their final product, but as a constantly-evolving network. The first thing users are introduced under Google Plus is the Stream. It is much like the Facebook News Feed, allows users to share photos, videos, links etc with customize option.
Five key features are there in Google Plus which have been listed below:
Circles:
One of its well-implemented features lets users categorize their contacts into circles for grouping our network contacts. By default, there are four circles 1. Friends 2. Family 3. Acquaintances 4. Following. Along with this, we can also create our own circles if needed like office, business, college etc. Circles are far easier to create than the time-consuming lists for Twitter or Facebook. With these social divisions you can choose to share content with unique circles.
Hangouts:
The next great feature of Google Plus is Hangouts. This is actually a group video chat service. You can invite your circles to get on their web-cams and hold a video chat. This group video chat feature exist only in Google Plus whereas in other social networks, we have one-to-one video chat. This is one of the most interesting aspects of Google Plus. Having an active Google+ profile and well defined groups means that you will be able to selectively manage the promising video meeting feature of Google+ for business.
Sparks:
Again a new approach of Google under Google plus is Sparks. Basically, It is an online sharing tools on any topic across the internet and helps to deliver our required content to our targeted circle friends. Always you will get the most updated content from the sparks tab itself. Once you have added some sparks, you can see news / feeds related to that terms by clicking. Its a very useful feature to keep yourself updated with any of your interest field.
Huddle & Instant Uploads:
Huddle is the group texting part of Google Plus. This can be accessible only by downloading Google Plus Android app on your Android phone. It has an improved user interface and also allow you to add multiple people or even circles to a huddle.
The android application is Google Plus’s real innovation. With an opt-in feature called “Instant Uploads,” your mobile phone’s photos are immediately online, and by default, those are private only to you. Later, can reshare the photos with appropriate group.
How Google Plus varies from Facebook ?
  • After its release, it has gained a lot of popularity so quickly but unfortunately it has not been launched widely while people can not use it until they are invited by anyone in Google plus.
  • Cannot post an item to a friends’ wall. we can only share something to the particular person with customize option.
  • Browser compatibility differ from each other. Google Plus can work well on the browser, Google Chrome whereas Facebook needs to be supported with some add-ons to be completely compatible for different web browsers.
  • Google Plus does not have a search feature that people use to look for somthing as Facebook has.
  • Inside Google Plus, it provides Gmail and few other functions that Google runs.
Although Google+ has some similar functionalities as FaceBook, Google makes it appear different through the form of circles, sparks, hangouts etc. For many of us, social networking has become a vital part of our lives. Websites like Facebook and Twitter have become just as popular as making a call or SMS. If you are not yet on Google Plus Social Network , give it a try today and share your experience here.
